Last Thursday felt strangely calm for a day I’d been waiting on for more than a year. It was late afternoon when I finally saw it: our toothpaste tablets, officially live on Amazon. I was sitting at the kitchen table, half-watching my son wrestle with a math problem, half-wondering whether anyone would even notice our listing in that enormous marketplace. And then the first Vine reviews started coming in.

If you’re not familiar with Amazon Vine, it’s one of the few programs I actually trust. Amazon invites a small group of their most reliable reviewers — people with a long history of thoughtful, honest evaluations — and gives them new products to try. They don’t get paid for their opinions, and brands can’t ask them to be kind. It’s nerve-wracking and refreshing at the same time, because you truly never know what they’ll say.
