How Much Was Your Electricity Bill This Month?

Can We Organize Energy Like We Organize Our Lives?

This winter, I opened my electricity bill and nearly did a double take—it was way higher than expected.

Lately, I’ve been focused on simplifying my home, keeping only what I truly need, and making my space more functional. But when I saw that bill, I realized—I wasn’t doing the same with my energy use.

I talk a lot about owning less, but what about using less?

Just like clutter builds up when we’re not paying attention, unnecessary energy consumption happens when we’re not mindful of it. And just like decluttering helps create a lighter, more intentional life, reducing energy waste can do the same—for our homes, our wallets, and the planet.

Minimalism and Energy: The Connection We Overlook

At its core, minimalism is about removing the excess and keeping only what adds value. The same principle applies to energy use:

✅ Home Organization → Remove unnecessary items, keep only what’s useful
✅ Time Organization → Manage routines efficiently, cut unnecessary commitments
✅ Energy Organization → Reduce waste, use only what’s needed

We simplify our spaces to reduce mental clutter.
We simplify our schedules to reclaim time.
So why not simplify our energy use to cut unnecessary waste?

Where I Was Unknowingly Wasting Energy

After my bill shock, I started paying closer attention to my habits. Here’s what I found:

🔌 Standby power – Electronics like TVs, microwaves, and chargers still use energy when plugged in, even if they’re off.
🔥 Heat loss – Up to 30% of indoor heat escapes through small gaps in windows and doors.
💡 Unnecessary lighting & heating – I was leaving lights and heaters on even when I wasn’t in the room.
🚿 Laundry & dishwasher habits – Washing everything in hot water and running the dishwasher when it wasn’t full was using way more electricity than necessary.

These were things I never really thought about, just like clutter that accumulates over time. And just like decluttering, small changes made a big difference.

Small Habits That Simplified My Energy Use

🏠 Warming Up Without Cranking Up the Heat
Instead of turning on an electric heater in my home office, I started using a warm blanket and layering up with thick socks. It turns out, I feel even cozier this way.

🔌 Unplugging or Using Power Strips
I organized my electronics and set up smart power strips, so I could turn off multiple devices at once—no more wasted standby power.

👕 Dressing for the Temperature
Instead of heating the whole house, I started wearing warmer indoor clothes—thermal tops, fleece-lined slippers. It’s such a small switch, but now I barely need the heater.

🍵 Drinking Something Warm Instead of Turning Up the Heat
A cup of hot tea or soup keeps me warm for hours—without adding to my energy bill.

🌞 Using Natural Heat & Light
During the day, I open my curtains to let in sunlight. At night, I close them to trap the heat inside. It’s a simple habit, but it makes a noticeable difference.

☀️ Considering Alternative Energy
Recently, I came across EnergySage, a platform that helps compare solar panel installation options. I’m not ready to switch yet, but I love knowing there are ways to be even more energy-efficient in the future.

Decluttering My Space, My Energy Use, and My Life

One thing I’ve learned from simplifying my home is that having less makes life feel lighter.

The same applies to energy use. Without realizing it, waste accumulates—whether it’s in the form of clutter, an overloaded schedule, or excessive electricity use. But when I make small, intentional changes, everything feels more in balance.

So now, I try to keep only what I need—in my home, in my daily routine, and in the energy I use.

It’s not about doing everything perfectly. Just noticing a little more, adjusting a little more.

What’s one small change you could try—whether it’s in your space, your energy use, or your daily habits? 😊
