Borrowed, not owned
What if home, like many things in life, was something we could share?
When my son entered middle school this year, he decided to play the cello. The school lent him a beginner’s instrument, and he’s been practicing every evening with so much joy. I felt grateful, not just because we saved money before making a big purchase, but because he could try, stumble, and fall in love with the sound without pressure.
Sharing isn’t always convenient. Sometimes the borrowed thing doesn’t feel perfectly mine. But often, it saves me from extra weight. Like the electric scooter I rent on rare weekends. The ride isn’t cheap, but not having to charge, repair, or store it is worth far more than the price. Airbnb is built on the same idea: a home that isn’t ours, but for a moment, feels like it could be.
Borrowed things remind me to take care, treating them with respect, as if they were my own. And they remind me to be thankful, because not everything has to be fully mine to be meaningful.
And maybe, if we zoom out, even the Earth itself is something we are only borrowing from our children, and their children. That thought changes how gently I want to live today.
